corner view - garden

a little over a year ago we still lived in the center of tel aviv in an apartment. and even if we did have the beach and a little park right next door, it still is something else with a garden. to just open the door and step into your own garden. i love the stillness that can be found there, the space and activities possible, to grow things, to follow the seasons. and i love the freedom it gives you as a family, allowing everyone to do his or her own thing, while still being at home and together.

and most recently i loved that it allowed us to improvise a lag baomer bonfire. and since it was just our own little lag baomer event we were absolutely free to mix some traditions. in denmark you pretty much cannot have a bonfire without snobroed (dough rolled around a stick) and then baked (or burned) over fire. when done (at least on the outside) you can stuff it with whatever you like. sausages, jam, cheese or, like we did, nutella.

the boys loved this dinner. and so did i. there's something about outdoor meals, especially those you make yourself over open fire - even if it is just bread and baked potatoes.

and now, let joyce of a perfect beginning be your guide through many more garden adventures.

  2. Take me to Denmark now... what a great tradition. Nutella and a dash of cinnamon would be my combination!

Your could be a documentary photographer - you really are naturally talented in this art form :^)

  4. I love a fire - outside for a braai (barbeque), inside in the fireplace, candles ... it gives such a sense of warmth and cosiness, yet also of excitement and adventure. The dough around a stick really brought back memories! As a 6-year old girl at a school event we did that - I loved it although the dough was not properly cooked. We called it "stokbrood" (stickbread). Unfortunately I never got to do it again! Maybe I must try in my fireplace one day!

  8. Lovely! It hasn't been warm enough in the evenings yet for hanging out around a little firepit. Soon, soon. I should try the bread on a stick (esp. w/nutella). I have little boys who don't like s'mores, but that? Yes.

  9. Oh, you gave me a wonderful idea: is snobroed regular bread dough? I must try roasting bread dough on a stick on an open fire!

  13. One of my happiest childhood memories is our family of six sitting in the woods in our backyard around a "campfire" as we called it, singing songs and roasting marshmallows.
