it really is magic
isn't it the cutest 2 day old chick?! and look what a fight it was:
this was the first of them to crack through into the world some 3 weeks ago. what a sight. now we've got 40 of them in the coop. we'll have to pass some on, but for now they're still with us.

somewhere, between black and white
we're back, but i haven't settled in yet. got back a couple of days ago and started school and work and life in general immediately. but my mind has still to settle in, and then od course, there are the suitcases to unpack.
i feel distracted, sentimental, excited, emotional, tired and hopeful - all depending on whether i try to decide what doors to close and what doors to open. and at the same time aware of how much i need to focus on here and now. inhale, exhale. one day at a time.

a moment of melting
i was trying to sort photos and empty the camera. and then i fell over these from a couple of weeks back. i think i just melted there for a moment. and then, after dragging myself up from the floor, i decided to go all mother-ish on you and share.
he went to kindergarten with a sleeveless shirt under a long sleeved blouse. he came home like this.
hope you're having a wonderful weekend.

golden moments :: instagram selection
it's been raining heavily for three days. and i love it. there are breaks now and then with the sun out and a bit of blue sky. a reminder that the rain will not last and we'll have the sun back soon enough.
but i can actually wear something remotely similar to winter clothes and drink tea and make soup without feeling like a hopelessly homesick scandinavian girl. i ALWAYS start missing the change of season in october. it's like my body craves wool and soup, and my mind the darkness and the leaves falling. i know. i'd have a hard time dealing with 4-5 months og long dark winter in scandinavia, but i still miss it.
and now we have it. and i've had pumpkin soup and chai tea. and woolen socks on inside the house. and my winter boots are out. that is the mediterranean version: my favorite clog boots from sweedish hasbeens.... oh, how i've missed you.
the above is from the instagram feed, again. golden moments @trinsch to celebrate the fall.
wishing you a golden week!

silently passing by
the other day we had to stop the car and get out to watch. first i thought it was storks (posted that to instagram too. oops), but after a closer look i believe it was cranes. anyway. what a sight! absolutely stunning as they floated on the sky above our heads, silently. they came in smaller groups, but there were hundreds of them. what a choreography.
thank you, for passing by.

colors of fall
september and october. the colors are warm, changing. i love this season. what is it with the sky these days.... the afternoon and sunset tones, the light. it's breathtaking. and we sleep so well too as the night have gotten colder.
we had friends visiting from denmark and ended the last holidays. been to a couple of weddings and soon we'll have some birthday celebration to do.
tomorrow a new week will begin.

furry cuteness
the kittens that should not have been. guess i need to base it on actual facts and not my hunch when i decide which are females and which are not, and which get fixed and which not.
their mother clearly wasn't a male.
anyway, now they are here so we'll just have to live with all that furry cuteness.

two days
have you seen anything this cute lately?
photo was taken two days after it hatched. now it's close to a week and the wings and the tale have already started to show real feathers. still unbelievably cute.
the crowded photo up there is while we had removed them from their box while cleaning it a bit. there's plenty of assistance when they need to be held.

there's a crack
as i said yesterday, we had a weekend of life and death.
we have had a couple of broody hens lying on what turned out to be more than a handful of eggs. i admit we're not so pro when it comes to taking care of broody hens, but we tried it once before and nature just handled it top notch. no interference needed from our end.
this time the first chick was dead when we found out it had hatched. the head was all bloody and we assumed it was a birth defect of some sort. there was another one under one of the two broody hens, alive and well, so no worries.
a couple of ours later it had died too. the head again bloody and we realized that one of the broody hens - or one of the others that also have been using the nest - had killed them both. apparently that happens. we felt really bad for not having saved it. it was so sad.
we didn't know what to do, but decided to take the eggs we could get to and place them in a homemade incubator. this one up there is the third one we watched as it hatched. it was awesome to watch.
did you know you can hear the chicks pipping inside the eggs a day or two before they hatch. it's so so crazy to listen to, and then suddenly, there's the sound of the chicks gently poking at the egg shell from inside.
the story continues as the eggs that remained with the hens also hatched. i had hoped the hens would have gotten their mothering instincts in place by then, but one more died. so i scooped up three newly hatched chicks and placed them with their friends in the box where we now keep all eight of them.
they are super cute! yellow, brown, black and gray, and three more on their way. they are all doing fine. the yellow one up there is now 2 days old. it's full of fluffy, soft energy.

outside :: inside
beets and sage in bloom - both from the garden.
it's been quiet from me. it's pesach here and easter elsewhere. D's of work and so are the kids. i'm going in tomorrow, but besides from that we've enjoyed being at home and at the beach. yes! at the beach! it's summer. or technically spring. doesn't matter. the house is warm, we're walking barefoot, got out the swim and beach gear, and some (not me!) are even swimming in the ocean again.
went to tlv the other day. D played beach volley and i had brunch with the boys at the beach cafe. then, as i was paying the bill, N had to go to the bathroom fast. and in the midst of packing all our stuff and getting the kids together i forgot to get the receipt back. and with that my credit card. this is the third time i've cancelled and ordered a new card in a year. actually four. i also cancelled my danish credit card one of the times. seriously. is it possible to live without credit cards in this world today? cause i am really considering that. just seems like i'm not fit for it. most annoying thing is, i'm sure it's there at that cafe, but they can't find it. last time i lost my wallet i closed the card and the next morning they called from the train station where's i'd left it while buying a bottle of water. i just walked out of there. to be honest, i lost it one more time, but that time i got it back before cancelling. again, i left it in a cafe with the receipt.
but at least D was cool about it. he's gotten really irritated in the past, but yesterday he wasn't too bad. annoyed, but keeping it to himself. or maybe he's just accepting that he'll just have to get used to it.
